MC was referred to the Good Shepherd through the AfEO project, which helps people who have an offending history within the last 12 months into private accommodation, with tailored support.
At the request of the client this story has been anonymised:
MC was living in probation approved premises and had gained employment but was travelling out of area for his job. Tina, Keyworker at the Good Shepherd, supported MC with various property viewings, and he eventually was offered accommodation. Tina also ensured his benefits were in place but unfortunately had been made redundant from his previous employment.
MC was referred to Sue, Good Shepherd’s Training and Development Key Worker and after an initial information and guidance appointment helped support MC with his CV and career development:
“MC expressed a keen interest in working within the construction industry. I informed him that I had links with a local training provider, and they were able to offer a 2-phase training programme which would enable MC to gain licenses and training to work within the construction industry.”
“Due to MC’s complex criminal background, I worked with his probation officer and the training provider’s Safeguarding Team to complete a risk assessment so that MC was able access the next available training programme. The next training programme was in less than a week, so it was challenging to complete this in time but thanks to the cooperation from everyone involved the risk assessment was completed in time.”
“MC was delighted to access the course, and we also accessed funding for his travel expenses via the Jobcentre.
MC added:
“If it wasn’t for the Good Shepherd, I think I’d be in a lot of trouble with my finances. They’ve helped me to keep me on track while I did my construction qualifications.
“Good Shepherd has helped me in lots of different ways. Just supporting me, phoning up places where I struggle to communicate with other people with my financial stuff, how to manage my money. I’m back on my feet again. And yeah, I can’t really say any more than that, but the Good Shepherd has given me that breathing space.”
“There’s always going to be struggles, and times when I have gone down and gone back up but Good Shepherd’s always been there and still there now so I can’t thank them enough.”
MC has now found permanent, full-time employment working as a fork-lift operator.
Good Shepherd supports people who have experienced homelessness, addiction, or have been involved with the criminal justice system.
